Amongst about a billion different games.

Anyway, the competition basically wants you to enter a piece of fan art in honour of the Wii console version release of the video game, Okami.

So, using inspiration garnered from the fan art, concept art and other images featured on the above site as well as experience from actually playing the game (which.. I've ben able to find a copy of) the contest holders want you to submit as many pieces of fan art for judging as you want, with the prize being a copy of the game on the wii, a wii itself, a years subscription to Deviantart.com and of course, some recognition in some way by members of CAPCOM themselves.

So, here are some sketches that I've hammered out so far in preparation:

The game follows a very sumi-e influenced style which you may or may not be able to tell by looking at the site (though I'd be very suprised if you couldn't to be honest.. ) and this is fortunate because I have a 'loose hand' type of drawing style so to speak.hippo_boy_willhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17031086264594993106noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5386661091178577167.post-34584623283370261252008-04-29T12:03:00.004+01:002008-04-29T13:21:59.699+01:00Radiohead CompetitionOn the site Aniboom, a competition is currently being hosted with the prize of $20,000 (about 40p in real money) for whoever is picked by the community and finally, Radiohead themselves to make a video for one of the songs on the album 'In Rainbows'.

Initially the competition asks that you submit a storyboard of your concept, timed to the song but as was evident as soon as submissions were being shown, alot of people seemed to have pretty much glazed over this stage and gone straight into making the actual video. Which is a bit annoying to be honest because this then removes alot of good ideas who's 'storyboards' aren't finalised executions of the concept. Also, this means that the quality bar for the judging community (a concept that I've never really been fond of) is greatly raised, with many a comment of 'umm the idea is good but i don't like how it looks like a drawn storyboard' arising all over decent entries, much to the frustration of my work partner Matt and myself.

So, instead of going it alone, we decided to team up. I would do the storyboard of the concept he'd already come up with and then he'd make it into an animatic.

The concept he came up with was for the song '15 steps' which has an upbeat rythm, almost mechanical in some parts. Matt told me that this is why the video concept involved a printer as its mechanics chug back and forth rhythmically. From this printer comes a small ink man who ends up in the paper tray after being printed. Not satisfied with this situation, he spends the rest of the video trying to clamber back up into the printer, fighting against the unrelenting torrent of paper that comes out at him. At different stages he falls down the page, gets knocked back by a sheet, tears through one layer of printed paper to the one below and dangles feriociously to the edge of the printed stack, all in an effort to find some peace from the never ending marathon. Eventually he finds solace in defeat, lays back on the stack and waits for the unending pile up to smother him until he is only a pool of ink that drains out and pools in front of the picture.

The main concept of this neverending struggle is one that I like alot but, the resolution in which the protagonist just ends up giving up is a little too defeated for me. Matt feels that this is in line with the kind of message that Radiohead would want to have typically in their music but the overall feel of the song is about fighting this relentless climb and then for the end result to actually not be what you wanted it like the 'sheer drop' lyrics suggest.

How come I end up where I started
How come I end up where I went wrong
Won't take my eyes off the ball again
You reel me out then you cut the string

How come I end up where I started How come I end up where I went wrong Won't take my eyes off the ball again You reel me out then you cut the string You used to be alright What happened? Did the cat get your tongue Did your string come undone One by one One by one It comes to us all It's as soft as your pillow You used to be alright What happened? Etcetera etcetera Facts for whatever Fifteen steps Then a shear drop
I think a triumph or at least 'just desserts' would be a more fitting ending and this seems to ring true in the narratives to other Radiohead videos such as 'Karma Police' in which a man who is relentlessly harassed and tortured by a slow chasing car gets revenge by setting it on fire but Matt was pretty 'un-sway-able' from his position. So, I conceeded that he was my client and that I would give him what he wanted to the best of my abilities.

By the time Matt had asked me to assist him, he had already written out what he wanted to appear in each frame of the animatic and drawn a few frames loosely of the storyboard. We met up to discuss exactly what he would like to see and I went through each and every description he gave with him to make sure to the best o my knowledge that I wasn't going to miss anything.

This is a good example of what we did over that couple of hours of discussion:

(If you want to read it: Just click for bigger)

So the page of text above is a transcript of Matt's original concept with my pencils over the top as evidence of my questions and clarifications on vague areas or instances where I've said 'is that going to work?' or 'is that the message that you want to get a across?' and then we've amended in some way. This was the manual for which I made the pieces.

These are Matt's sketches of what he'd want in the frames. I used them largely as influences for the video's style so that I could retain as much of Matt's 'Feel' as possible.

Because the time constraints Matt had set upon me for this brief were tight, I knew that the work I was going to do was to be done fast and not as polished as I would have liked it to have been. The time I was given was literally, he asked me on the night of day 1, we discussed the boards on day 2 and by the end of day 3 he wanted everything ready for working on. This deadline was made even tighter by the fact that I would be travelling to Newcastle on day 3 at midday to procure some work experience so I needed to crack on.

After listening to '15 steps' a couple of times to get the mood of the song into my head fully, I began sketching out the printer and figuring out what parts needed to move.
I understood that Matt would be using Aftereffects to make all the componments move around so I was aware of how things needed to be drawn and layered.
I figured that I would only actually need 4 frames total because all the angles and movements that Matt wanted could be brought about by moving the cameras and set pieces around in the editing program. This took a bit of pressure off me.
The four frames I needed to make were the outside of the printer from a front facing angle (as it the printer was at your eye line) with moving 'paper' layers and flashing lights, an internal printer scene using moving 'cogs' and 'roller' layers to show the paper being pushed through, an internal 'ink catridge' scene with moving ink cartidge layer and finally another outside printer scene but this time from a low view point, looking up towards the printer to give the impression of a much larger scale to the printer and so that we can better relate to the ink chap who's plight we will be witnessing. The last frame was to be the most involving I knew because in this, I must accomodate for all the action that most of the video will make use of including fully articulate marrionettes of the ink figure and several distinctive events like holes being punched in the paper.
Thankfully, Matt was wanting a fairly sketchy style to the whole piece so my working style naturally suited his needs.

As it turns out, I was able to turn the sketches into finished storyboard marionettes by colouring them and after showing the first frame to Matt, he liked it so I carried on throughout the rest of the frames.

This is what I came out with. Each one is very much like the planned out descriptions I gave for them. I guess this shows that if you're stuck for time, even a little planning beforehand will give you a much smoother experience when it comes to actually grafting.

Basically everything in each image can be moved about seperately but each moveable part is grouped to what I feel are intuitive members of its 'family' (like each part of the printers case being grouped) so that I give Matt an instantly easier time moving stuff around to his needs. In the case of the last frame in paticular this is important because there is even more stuff to move around than I've shown in the above image so it was vital that I helped Matt to meet his deadline by making it easy.

When it came down to it, Matt told me that he ended up not actually having the time to spend making the animatic because he had left it a bit late to enter the competition using this piece. Instead, he submitted a video that we have both worked on in the past which also happens to be set to a piece of Radiohead from the 'In Rainbows' album and so far, the video seems to be quite popular. Bit annoyed my more recent efforts didn't really come to any fruition but I held up my end of the bargain so I can't really do much more than actually make the animatic myself.

Heres to a rehashed contest entry win attempt!hippo_boy_willhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17031086264594993106noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5386661091178577167.post-70944140791953812922008-04-22T12:31:00.002+01:002008-04-29T00:54:49.362+01:00Deciding what to sendSo the date for entering Northern Design was almost upon the entrants and I hadn't yet selected any work to enter. Bugger!

Looking over work I could submit, sadly my lack of constant final image production left me with little choice over what I could use to present myself. This is unfortunate but a strong testament to a weakness of mine; an inability to focus on a final piece. Ideas? I got ideas; pouring left right and centre. Finalising though, different situation. Its not that I don't finish projects; its that I have trouble pouring time into making a polished piece rather than craploads of scribbly drawings.
I can see the positive side of quick drawing skills because it lets me get ideas out like POW POW POW! but getting someone to dribble over the concept, that I need to work on.

So, the pieces I chose are these three. They're all examples of my illustration but they show different elements of it.

I was originally going to submit some of the 'Ron' sketches I've been working on but, the dog theme helped the 3 images to work better I feel and they're a bit more presentable so, I hope I've made the right choice and net myself a bit of student debt killer!hippo_boy_willhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17031086264594993106noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5386661091178577167.post-12722919912678228942008-04-17T02:53:00.002+01:002008-04-17T03:07:18.916+01:00E-mailing Tony(again, it should be noted that this email was sent nearly 2 weeks before this date I've blogged)

I decided that now would be a good time to update Tony on whats going on with the whole character development malarky so, here's what I sent him:

Hi tony,
how are you doing? Hope you had or are having a nice easter, the time off is different around the country so I'm not sure if you're still on your well deserved break ho ho :)

Here are some sketches of what I've come up with so far on the character; I've been showing them to different forums without giving away too much information just to see if they like the look and feel behind the different characters and the e-mails i've been getting back have been really good so far so, what do you think of it?

First, I should explain that I decided to split the Random Ronnie fellow into seperate characters, allowing a different facet of his 'randomness' to form in each of the personalities. I did this because when developing Ronnie and talking to alot of people about the character, I thought that a random character by default has little in the way of a discernable or reliable character or personailty so I'm trying this way of mainting audience interest.
The house that these characters exist within is also quite.. loose in the old 'reality' department but still looks and operates like a house most of the time, just bending to the context of the story (like rooms turning up for plotlines where there were no rooms before for example). The enviroment is something I'm working on currently so that I can do some storyboards with relationships between characters but, I'm thinking at the moment that the cartoon is set mostly in a house that Ron, 'Neil' and 'Pok' occupy, with their neighbour Benyamin in the house next door and the creepy little girl Lucy who watches from tree branches and shadows outside the house. Depending on the episode context though, the enviroment could change if we needed a townscape or a grave yard or a fun fair or something.

With each of the personalities then, we get another form for a new branch of the audience to indentify with. I had designed them more with the mind to contrast them with Ron, rather than just pander to the audience's tastes but hopefully this is a good side effect.
For example theres 'Ron' (all names are still working titles) who is the happy go lucky protagonist and is the main evolution of Random Ronnie, bearing a strong feel of the original concepts you provided me with his curly red hair and general feel. I've made him with the intention that he's the most.. amicable and maybe human character in there. I guess the way to think about my idea of 'Ron' is like Stimpy from 'Ren & Stimpy' in terms of his friendliness and general good nature; only Ron is more intelligent at this point. Ron will always want to help someone in need so we get plot hooks in that way and his personality clashes quite strongly with the overly aggressive and frustrated sock puppet called 'Neil' that he finds in his cellar.
'Neil' is an ancient demon god trapped in this poorly made puppet's form and this has made him very bitter over the centuries, giving him a resentment for anything happy or alive in general. He is the more malicious, angry character to contrast with Ron so, I guess they're a kind of 'Ren & Stimpy' coupling in that sense with a happy/angry clashing but instead of beating Ron senseless every episode, 'Neil' has very little physical power other than being able to use 'spooky ancient demon powers' (whatever the context of the paticular episode deems those to be) such as being able to throw his voice, move objects, summon demonic imps to perform tasks for him or being able to possess small animals. 'Neil' fantasizes often about being able to possess Ron someday when he is asleep or otherwise helpless and then using his body as a vessel, open a portal to an unknown dimension of pure terror. But, since he's usually quite helpless and Ron is aware of 'Neil's intentions, this outcome seems unlikely at the moment. 'Neil' moves about by either being on Ron's or another characters hand or, by being on top of a stick which ends off the bottom of the screen (looks a bit odd but, suspension of disbelief and all that).

I'll try to get through the other 3 characters a bit faster.

'Pok' is the dog of the household who has no eyes, just glowing white eye sockets. His origins are unknown of by the other characters but 'Neil' suspects that he is some government weapon gone wrong which escaped and turned up in the back garden. It would be more accurate to describe Pok as genderless rather than a male or female but the other characters find it humanizes 'him' a little to assign him a gender role. Pok spends his time following Ron around whereever he goes, literally sliding after him in a stood up or sat down position without moving his legs at all, as if he was a cel of animation that someone literally just slid across a scene. This is to emphasize the overwhelming ominous creepy factor that Pok exudes as he is a usually silent but still very intimidating character and even Ron and 'Neil' are typically weary of him. When not being horribly frightening, Pok looks for objects to fill his eye sockets with like bottles, lightbulbs or legs of ham which could be used as a good ice breaker in a scene or a punchline. This is also where Pok gets 'his' name from, from the 'POK!' noise when something is removed from a socket.
Benyamin is the foreign exhange student neighbour who lives next door to Ron and 'Neil'. He is a very stressful character who has as a result developed an over-eating disorder and understandably, an anxiety over how he feels about his body, which.. makes him nervous and eat more. In an attempt to 'deal' with his problems he often wears ridiculously large clothing or very odd eye catching clothing to avert attention from his frame. His fears include insects, dogs and 'Neil' and as such is quite a timid character, explaining why his best friend is his cat, Toasty.
And finally, Lucy or 'that creepy little girl' is a wannabe voyeur who spies on Ron from outside of the house, from tree tops or in the shadows when he's outside. She has a strong obsession with Ron and his friendly ways but prefers to communicate in her own way to him by dressing as different objects and animals she thinks he likes so that if he ever spots her, he might know that she knows something about him rather than ever actually speak to him . Which.. is a very stalker-ry in which to get to know someone. But she can serve as a kind of narrator to some episodes or a plot hook for investigation.

So, here's the link again if you missed it up on the top of the email.

Also, a second question. Can you please give me some pointers as to how you present a character for a client or similar audience? Would you include some possible storyboards/storylines as well? maybe some walk cycles/character sheets? I've made a bit of a pigs ear of that in this email so some advice on how to do it properly from someone who's got so much valuable experience on the subject would mean alot to me. :)
This would hopefully make it a bit easier to show more and more prospective viewers my ideas so I can get more valuble research on refining or completely changing what we've come up with so far.

Ok, so, once more, here is the link to the images of the characters I've talked about in case you didn't catch it cause this is a long mail, and, I hope to speak to you again soon!

Thank you so much for this opportunity again Tony!

Will

The e-mail is a bit of a fair old length, I need to trim these down in future to avoid confusing clients. He is an angry character who has a bitter but hilarious disliking for anything living or representative of happy life. He takes out his frustration for the freedom he lacks by possessing other people, objects or using his spooky ancient demon powers to try and make others lives a misery.

This is 'Ron' then the happy-go-lucky protagonist who is amicable but careless and naive to the ways in which this world works. He is the most 'human' of the characters in the sense that he's the kindest and most logical one and I'm assuming the character most people will identify with. His long body tends to be drawn a little warped to emphasize how ltall he is but also, his playfulness. You don't get how happy he is usually from the above and below images so I need to draw some very thourough character sheets up with a broad spectrum of emotions and movements but in these images you ARE seeing the relationship often shared between 'Ron' and 'Neil' the puppet as Ron is aware of 'Neil's' sinister intention to dominate and possess his mind someday.

I should show more people to garner impressions of these and alert Tony to my progress so far. Otherwise, I need to steam on and get this tidied and finished me thinks.hippo_boy_willhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17031086264594993106noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5386661091178577167.post-9529916214197138882008-04-17T00:40:00.003+01:002008-04-17T02:19:13.597+01:00A psychological breakdownSomething which I've been thinking about is adding other characters alongside 'Ron'. I want to take the 'random' element from the protagonist and distill it into a supporting cast. My reasoning for this is the 'random' in the original concept is potentially a powerful surreal comedy tool but in one character, myself and those I've discussed the subject with believe that the personality would be absorbed and lost. So, break it into several, discernable chunks.
What I've observed in shows like 'Aqua Teen Hunger Force!' and 'Ren & Stimpy' is that a contrast of personalities makes for a watchable cast, with a character like Frylock or Stimpy who are either logical or optimistic enough to get us through each episode intact. We might want to subvert this like they do occasionally but for now, I'm going to stick with the basics that I'm starting to pick up.

I'm thinking at the moment of having 'Ron' as a happy-go-lucky character with his sock puppet as an overly agressive contrast, so we get just in those two characters already a flexible range of possibilities and reactions to events.

To contrast with those two strong personalities, I'm thinking of incorporating a meek, nervous character who operates close by, maybe a neighbour who suffers from a nervous disposition and is frequently disturbed by the actions of the main cast. I'm not certain about this paticular personality as of now, because I don't want the setup to turn into a kooky, "Normanmeyer's being frightened by the 'un-normality' of the Adam's family" situation so, I need to watch that this character isn't very dull or cheesy.

(If you don't understand that last point, the Normanmeyer's were a run-of-the-mill American family who were used as a direct contrast to the Adams family in the cartoon show which was very cheesy. Not the contrast itself, but the mood of the cartoon in general. I would post a picture of them up here but honestly, I've had some trouble locating one. I'll put one up if I gets one)

I could also use a mysterious silent character as an ice-breaker or punch line-deliver-er in the main cast. This sounds a bit complicated so, I'll mention Silent Bob. His character usually stands by the sideline whilst the rest of the cast do all the talking, simply miming agreements or confusion or other light expressions until critical points in the narrative when his intervention can influence unexpected inciting moments or conclusions, e.g. when he comes out with a pearl of wisdom just as no one else can call anything to mind or by acting almost on intuition to a dangerous situation and saving all of his friends. This character is a leveller, a creator of equilibrium and a proverbial kick in the arse for plot lines.

Maybe some kind of rudimentary animal could suit this position, like anthropomorphic Brian from 'Family Guy' only, with less personality. Ironically here I think I would specifically want this character to have little of what we would normally call character. Well, if I intended to make him or her mysterious that is. I suppose Silent Bob has character, and he's very expressive, but I have this idea currently for having a very intimidatingly silent and mysterious version of this archetype and for that, I'd need what was outwardly a very 'blank slate'.

As for anymore characters... Maybe some kind of observer over the whole thing or a narrator? Not sure if it's necessary really, doesn't feel like it at the moment but it wouldn't hurt to have another character who can either explain what is going on or maybe just another way of introducing plot lines. Like 'Ron's no. #1 fan stalking him everywhere and thus being able to tell us exactly what he's been up to or something similar.hippo_boy_willhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17031086264594993106noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5386661091178577167.post-8227091197052952822008-04-16T23:11:00.004+01:002008-04-17T00:36:33.053+01:00Audience ResearchThis is the first post in a series of back log post dates as I've been looking for houses recently and have silly-ly neglected to update the old blog. Theres a bit to go through, ticking boxes and all that.

So, I overcame the problem of which direction to take the character, now on the working title of 'Ron' cause it's one that my 'focus groups' have assigned him. I did this really by talking over the problem with the inhabitants of forums on sites who's audiences might watch the 'older-teen-to-adult' cartoons I'm talking about. The sites I'm talking about are collectedcurios.com, newgrounds.com, deviantart.com in the cartoon section and friends and colleagues who have this viewing taste. I still need to post up on conceptart.org to gain more opinions but I'm doing pretty well so far.
The range of the sites, although not specifically chosen for this purpose is good because it grants me a range of sub audiences within my broad audience bracket. For example, collectedcurios is host to a fairly small community who discuss the works of the character artist, Jolly Jack and so have this one artist in common for aesthetic taste. Newgrounds was undoubtedly the most difficult to gather constructive points from because it's users are primarily young teenagers and as such, alot of users tend to have little patience for others but, in a way this is great because it's like being able to just dip my hand into pure intended audience and see how it feels. Deviantart was the most understanding of the sites and my guess for this would be because this is a community that is specifically used to dealing out and receiving criticisms with art work.

To cut a long, long, LONG story short over the forum posts and discussions with peers, I had basically asked which direction my audience felt that I should take for the character. It was agreed by collectedcurios almost unanimously, by my peers and by alot of newgrounds and deviantart that a character with a discernable personality who they can see in different strange situations each episode, as opposed to a completely random character.hippo_boy_willhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17031086264594993106noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5386661091178577167.post-49638186857159846962008-03-30T17:56:00.002+01:002008-03-30T17:59:30.680+01:00Split over how to developI'm a bit stuck over how to start developing the character and what direction to take him. As I can see currently, there are two distinct paths. One is of complete random mania and the other is a more Adult Swim surrealism path.

My intention is to make characters which follow up both of these paths using a quick personality and some coloured pictures and then show them about to intended audience members and Tony to see which direction to continue in.hippo_boy_willhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17031086264594993106noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5386661091178577167.post-25702145049640892182008-03-30T16:35:00.003+01:002008-03-30T18:09:53.814+01:00First colour of a 'ronnie'
This might not be what he ends up looking like at all, I'm just trying some colours out on some of my doodles.

EDIT: I've been told by a few of the potential audience members that I've shown this blog to that this kind of drawing of the character is very 'cartoonish' and doesn't feel very 'adult'.
This is concerning to me obviously because I wanted the character to feel like it could have a serious potential, or just not be disregarded as a kids cartoon.
How to solve this..? I'll come back to this post when I've gotten some advice or thought more about it.hippo_boy_willhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17031086264594993106noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5386661091178577167.post-34280038604618958052008-03-30T14:58:00.014+01:002008-03-30T16:52:01.373+01:00Sketch Doodle ideas for character.<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; I'm using red curly hair here purely because that was the hair colour of the character given to me in the roughs Tony showed me.

The pig, Isreali and the boy in a dinosaur costumes are side characters I'm thinking of.

I'm finding it difficult to proceed beyond the point of just doodling the character doing random things because by default, the character lacks alot of definition and it's really difficult to tell what direction if any is a correct one.
I mean, alot of the drawings I've done here show 'Ronnie' (working name) with a very elasticated kind of body, showing explosive random potential through his form, with a sock puppet which he talks to so.. there is a 'random' mania element there or as some kind of goblin or animal or popular cultural icon like Shakespeare. The seperate elements on their own might be amusing and all but it's bloody difficult trying to pin him down. What I'm suspecting from alot of these drawings is that the character would end up being some screaming deranged mess which would satisfy the quota of being random I guess.
THIS kind of random:

Who knows, a completely manic character might work. But I would wager that the show it starred in would need a couple of other characters to counter and contrast it's personality. You know, like the genie from Disney's 'Aladdin'?. His character is built around the comedy style that Robin Williams is good at; fast paced schtick that changes direction constantly through various voices and impressions of personalities.

My guess is that without the blander personality types to distill 'Genie' through out the film, you would lose interest in him quicker.hippo_boy_willhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17031086264594993106noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5386661091178577167.post-2958840629023661132008-03-29T18:31:00.007+00:002008-03-29T19:40:32.185+00:00Northern Design/T-shirt stuffI've taken my own spin on.. my own spin of what I should do for these illustration submittals and will probably submit something that is a slightly more polished version of what you see here because these drawings come alot more naturally to the way in which I work.

What you can see below are drawings I've taken just based on people and things I see when I'm eating in a cafe or sat on a bus. Pretty dull sounding stuff sure but it suits me so, you can go sit on it.

There are a couple of doodles of some of my friends dogs there too as well as my parents and my brother. I'll mess about with the images and select or make some more if I feel I need to but, I think if I presented them well enough, most of these drawings would be more than suitable.

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; Here are a couple of examples:

So there is an old school theme going on here with lots of 8-bit pixel shapes or adaptations on those shapes, gathering appeal from reminiscence of the games and a growing up around the imagery.
However much I really like these shirts, I think unless I can add something new to the theme, I'd best stay away from it to avoid blending into the many many others out there.

Tell you what, tomorrow morning I'll hammer out a good few t-shirt designs and see if anything comes out of it. I've got a feeling that this kind of brief is best answered just off the top of your head really, so I'll have the results of that for you tomorrow!hippo_boy_willhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17031086264594993106noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5386661091178577167.post-26733331393395546582008-03-27T22:29:00.003+00:002008-03-27T22:32:32.617+00:00XNA: Bringing game design into your handsThis is based on info taken from fanboy.com so I didn't write it myself but I've fully understood what the post is telling me and I'm currently downloading the available software ready for running what tests I can of any game we make.

It's very cool that Microsoft is doing this - creating video games has always been very closed, hats off to Gates and Co, on this one:

Microsoft Invites the World to Create Its Own Xbox 360 Console Games for the First Time

"In the 30 years of video game development, the art of making console games has been reserved for those with big projects, big budgets and the backing of big game labels. Now Microsoft Corp. is bringing this art to the masses with a revolutionary new set of tools, called XNA Game Studio Express, based on the XNA platform. XNA Game Studio Express will democratize game development by delivering the necessary tools to hobbyists, students, indie developers and studios alike to help them bring their creative game ideas to life while nurturing game development talent, collaboration and sharing that will benefit the entire industry.

By providing an integrated, seamless development environment based on Visual Studio Express and .NET that simplifies the integration and use of game content, XNA Game Studio Express makes game development easier to accomplish for smaller projects, strongly increasing the chance for great game ideas to make it out of the concept stage and into the hands of gamers everywhere.

The XNA Game Studio Express beta will be available Aug. 30, 2006, as a free download on Windows XP, for development on the Windows XP platform. XNA Game Studio Express will give anyone with a Windows XP-based PC access to a unified development tool that liberates the creation of great Xbox 360 and Windows XP-compatible games, providing a new alternative to the existing multithousand-dollar development kits that many console games require. The final version of XNA Game Studio Express will be available this holiday season."

hippo_boy_willhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17031086264594993106noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5386661091178577167.post-86774350022891026582008-03-27T22:25:00.003+00:002008-03-27T22:28:41.132+00:00Figure drawing with Todd Harris

This is a drawing critique and refresher on figure drawing/toning from concept artist Todd Harris. But.. it is possible that Owen was thinking of an even more abstracted look for the characters so I need to take that into account. I'm thinking this because that would correlate with the style of Loco Roco and Patapon that he talked about.

To be honest, I'm pretty sure that if I made it look good enough, I'm pretty sure I could have almost complete free reign over what I made the style of the game to be as Owen has told me a few times more or less that he just wants something that works really. Need to stop limiting myself from the off set :P.

Anyway, I should take a look at hyper-simplified human form in image culture if I want anymore stylistic research I think at the moment, but it's time for some drawings I think.hippo_boy_willhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17031086264594993106noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5386661091178577167.post-76359578430496748702008-03-27T15:42:00.004+00:002008-03-27T20:09:52.434+00:00Animation examplesThe kind of audience Tony is wanting to aim at is around mid teens and up, basically being anyone who would watch cartoons online. The feel of the cartoon is to be surreal as Tony requested.
'Surreal' can be interpreted in a number of ways and one of the ways I think Tony would be particularly keen to avoid would be a 'surreal' cartoon which just involved senseless violence just for the sake of it because he would feel like I was copping out and not doing anything really worth watching. I believe though that violence used effectively could certainly be a very useful tool in entertaining this audience so I will probably end up working some of it in somewhere.

What we've got here are some examples of what I feel relates to what we're trying to achieve here; some of them along the lines of what we want and maybe one or two that really stray off the mark.

'Happy Tree Friends' from Mondo Media is an example of a twist on cutesy characters commiting paradoxically horrific and violent acts upon each other.
I don't know quite how I feel about this show. My understanding of why someone would watch it would be for the inventive if somewhat predictable deaths and not for the characters, who do have their own personalities but they pale in comparision to the amount of timing and development poured into the more violent aspects of the show. I like the visual style, the animation and the sound effects but usually I find the jokes to be too shallow for my taste. Thats not to say it's not good for a quick chuckle if you're waiting for something else to load, I just wouldn't spend a half hour of my time watching it.

http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/123073

In a similar vein of small animal anarchy comes 'Retarded animal babies' or 'RAB' for short. You'll have to follow the link above if you want to watch it because the hosting site doesn't allow for embedded video.
I like RAB because its alot more unpredictable than shows like 'Happy tree friends' and although the comedy it employs is very crude, it's fluctuating mood and temprement works well. After ten or so episodes, the colon, cursing, boob and dick jokes tend to wear a bit thin but the purely surreal plot devices seem to be enough to keep a hugely dedicated fan base watching. Unexpected one-liners also seem to do this.
Maybe this cartoon shows that on the internet, something hyper surreal, if interesting enough, can be enough to draw continual interest. I'm not convinced just yet though. I would prefer to be part of something that was a bit more substantial.

Now, they're not strictly INTERNET cartoons, but, up until recently in the UK, it's difficult for people outside of America to view them due to differences in legislation between Cartoon Network of America and the other international branches of Cartoon Network. Thus, alot of the international fanbase for the show stems from uploaded episodes, which is how I came across it. There is a varying 'feel' to the kind of content and comedy that features on Adult Swim, typically action/thriller based Animés and surreal cartoon animations.
The shows are all aimed at an 18+ audience so this is pretty relevant research!

12 oz mouse: Fast. Scribbled drawing style throughout and vastly erratic storylines which tend to have a light theme of alchoholism and bank robbery. The protagonist (Mouse) is a cocky drunk and that is pretty much the driving force of the show.

Sealab 2021: Based on the Hannah Barbera cartoon -Sealab 2020. During this year, the crew's professionalism and morals have slowly degraded, causing the crew to spend more time goofing off in various ways rather than doing any serious work. See, these characters with their oddball attributes and a complete disregard for continuity give way for the surreal to pour in from every direction. There are also some ideas for themes of episodes or side characters.

Fear and concern, very blue emotions shown here. You can see here I'm using a much looser drawing style than Tony's and this is for a couple of reasons. It's faster when idea generating and usually I find it's a quick way of making an image more kinetic and eye catching.

Scary guffaw. The general idea of this is that the character would have a sock puppet with him which he whispers to, or is much more involved in the stories, by being an actual character, perhaps alot wiser or much more crazied than the protagonist; anything to supply some kind of contrast of character really. Maybe the puppet could inform most of the character's important decisions or could try to purposely attempt to disrupt him. It could be a blood thirsty maniac but it's spirit is trapped in a lowly sock puppet. In this case, maybe the character aquired it through some voodoo ritual or found it in a bin when he moved in, which used to be the house of said maniac who blew himself up or made some crazy deal in which he'd be this puppet for some reason. Or maybe it was bestowed upon 'Ronnie' by a crazy god child or something.
Anyway, you'll see it pop up in a fair few of the sketches.

This is what I can only describe as an aztec yam. Maybe 'Ronnie' eats these regularly or is under the delusion that he started life as one or that one of them in particular is actually his mother. I like the sworls around the yam, they make it very mystical.

Yeah, I'm not even totally sure whats going on in this picture. This was because I've got this massive long leash of artistic license so I can run around and do whatever I want to the character BUT, I'm concerned that the character is far too random and has nothing currently which defines him as a character that I think an audience who watch regular cartoon series' would be able to identify with.
Yeah, he's got the same hair, same shirt, same appearance each time we see him but I'm having a hard time picking out a discernable character within all this. This isn't my client's fault, I know that this character isn't fully fleshed out so its my job to fill in this gap. That is, after I iron out the character and exactly what it can do when we say he's 'Random'.

Instantly to me, the idea of a random character suggests anarchiac chaos; a complete lack of stability in a personality and that's what's worrying me. I think this could be played right, it's just when I'm mulling this over, I keep getting that it will be really difficult for someone watching to find something they can attach themselves to. Like, a guy pulling a frog out of his ass and then sticking a sausage through a china vase might be funny for the first couple of 'random' times it happens but I can see it getting tiresome.
Maybe it won't though. Maybe, there is a right kind of 'Random'.

When I say there are different kinds of random, I mean a character could be random completely; none of their actions are influenced by the previous and their personality fluctuates constantly or, as in the case of shows like 'Ren and Stimpy', the character could have a set form of personality, such as psychotic or naive or loving as Ren and Stimpy do, and then each episode sees them in completely new surroundings, new context, new roles/jobs/positions etc. The difference there is is that you've got all the mad cap unpredictability you could ever want, but this is then combined with these set character types who will typically act in a particular way. This means that each episode is a great new chance to explore who the characters are, as you're always asking yourself 'How would the character react to this?', so every time, your audience see more and more of the different aspects of the character from new angles and (hopefully) start to identify with them. This is the kind of direction at the moment I would like to see from this project as I've seen it work many times. However, a completely random character may work and I won't say it won't so early on I just don't want to spend alot of time finding out because it seems like a very shaky premise.

The look of the character is very basic at this point; either with just a hat and a t-shirt or some duo tone shirt and trousers combo. The two concepts are both quite old feeling, the version with a hat like a drawing from a saucy greeting's card and the red-headed version like something out of a cartoon for kids. This is the kind of work that my client has been involved with in the past though so that's not really surprising and again, I'm not trying to fault him here, it's just his style.
Anyway, as I mentioned the two looks have distinctly different feels to them and due to the audience Tony has fitted the brief with, I'd be instantly more inclined to follow in developing the look of the more 'adult' style of the character. However, I will probably take inspiration from both versions and then end up making a character that might not resemble either of them.

Before I go any further, I need to start showing you some ideas of the kind of stuff I think Tony is aiming this brief at. I warn you and I'll probably do so again but, the research is going to be quite wide because it is a HUGE area of animation to aim at. I get the feeling it's going to be testing to please too but, I've seen alot of online cartoons so.. at least I'm not going into this totally blindfolded (-.-)
hippo_boy_willhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17031086264594993106noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5386661091178577167.post-64017934613331338982008-03-25T22:04:00.005+00:002008-03-25T23:57:14.133+00:00The random characterSo this is the first post for the character development brief that I'm in the process of for the animator Tony Garth who has worked on many many projects such as Dangermouse, Henry's Cat and the Discworld video games. He's a very friendly chap and was more than happy enough to let me try this bit of work out for him so I owe him some real focus.

Here is the brief, taken from an e-mail from Tony to myself:

Dear Will, As I explained, ‘Random Roger’ (working title) is an idea that I am working on with Vince James of Fat City Films in Manchester. Based on the material that I have shown you I would really appreciate your ‘take’ on the idea and design of the project. The idea is aimed mainly at a teen audience and as Vince and I are old gits it would help to get your perspective. I know there isn’t much to work with as we are still at an early stage but I will let you have copies of everything we have to date. Thanks again for your help. Tony Garth

And here are the two sheets he included in the e-mail. There's a wiki exclusively dedicated to zombie survival; full of theories on escape when the inevitable comes and everything you can do to prepare yourself to be ready for the big Z.

Here is the main site with links to anything you'd want to know on the how-to of zombie survival such a zombie education, gear and weapons to use and the exact science (?) of how zombies come about.

The page that interested me the most was the zombie games page which has lots of links to various zombie games of varying genre; survival and co-operation based to more shooting orientated. Here are some of the more noticeable examples:

URBAN DEAD

Urban Dead is a free-to-play browser-based multi-player game where you play the survivor or victim of a zombie outbreak in a quarantined city centre, alongside tens of thousands of others.

Although it is a browser-based game and lacks alot of visual lovlieness, Urban Dead seems to have a strong idea of the kind of game I think I'm involved in. This is what the creators meant by browser-based if you didn't pick up on that. So its a very text heavy affair. However, the game gives you the option of being one of several kind of survivors or victims of a recent zombie apocolypse, then based on the role you chose gives you an objective such as heal civilians or find your friend etc. The game is also an MMORPG which means that it is a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game so the decisions of others can and will effect whether or not your character's survival! Compelling.

So I made a character for myself and chose the medic class so that I would have something to heal myself when I inevitably got bitten. Ho ho! Smart thinking.

The game works on a turnbased sort of play so you take an action then your opponent does and so on. You're given action points which are expensed on actions (suprisingly) from tuning your radio to hitting a zombie with a crowbar.

After starting outside a hospital, I entered the building and found it full of people who wern't saying much, so I made my excuses and left to search adjacent buildings for somewhere to rest when I logged off. The instructions for the game had told me that it was my initial perogative to secure a position like this lest I be eaten in my sleep so I off I went searching. Most of the buildings close by had been heavily barricaded by users but I found an old factory with an open window. BUT OH NO! there was a zombie outside! So I began hammering the -use pistol- button until I'd expended all 6 of my rounds, only to find they'd all gone stray of their target. 'Modern firearms indeed!' I muttered to myself then promptly went for it old school for a round of fisticuffs with the undead bugger. This I could do and landed a hit for 2 points of damage! Sucess! 2 that is, out of 60. And then the zombie promptly took 4 bites out of me and infected me.
So I ran inside, healed myself with my only first aid kit and logged off.

I think this game has alot of potential influence on what we're trying to do indeed. This is at least the sort of thing I envisioned being possible in our game.

ZOMBIE SIMULATOR

A neat little program, this 'zombie simulator' shows a randomized plane of dots and squares representing a city and its inhabitants. Then, it adds 4 green dots which begain rapidly assimilating the other dots until there are no 'human' dots left.

Quirky idea, its not really a game but more of an entertaining piece of code to watch a few times.

DEAD FRONTIER

Play Dead Frontier Night Three

This is another shoot-em-up style game but it has a bit of a gritty feel to it and so I felt deserved a special mention. This is a top-down game like the original grand theft auto series and kind of plays like that loosely. You move with the WASD keys and use a mouse to aim and fire whichever weapon you are holding at the suprisingly sturdy and thus frightening zombies that invade the streets as you make your way to the helipad.

OK enough zombie games for now.. there are literally hundreds and I need to do some real drawing before meeting with Owen 0.0 Don't want to be empty handed :P!hippo_boy_willhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17031086264594993106noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5386661091178577167.post-26897921508130336922008-03-21T11:25:00.004+00:002008-03-21T16:17:44.002+00:00Other Zombie survival games ? !

Zombie Survival - Survive against the wave of zombies

Because theme is one that translates so well into video game action, its no wonder there is a veritable buffet of Zombie Survival games. I'm not talking specifically about Resident Evil survival horror types (maybe I should be, especially 2+3 which deal with zombie city survival, although not in the magnitude that I have in mind) but just straight up killing zombie/dodging zombie games. I think our game will have more depth to it than this but this is a good example of the theme we're aiming at currently.

Here is a game in Second Life in which you pretty much just shoot waves and waves of undead until they eventually get you. You can't win, just survive for longer periods of time than others so, in that respect its kind of like Tetris. In no other way is this game remotely like Tetris.
I'll give you someone with a greater understanding on the game's perspective:

Onder Skall reports from Louise 193, 230, 39 (Mature)

I’ve been meaning to tell you all about Garage of DOOM for some time now, and the creator Moriash has been super patient with me and one hell of a guy. Thanks for waiting man, sorry I dragged this one out a bit…

So, let me tell you about Garage of DOOM. It’s in the alpha stage at the moment, which means that it’s a work in progress with lots of bugs to be worked out. It also means that it’s free to play. Free is good!

When you arrive in the office, grab the gun from the “in case of zombie attack break glass” box. Click on the double-doors, and you’ll find yourself in a garage. Soon skeletons and little zombie security guards start coming in from the corners, followed by mummies and shadows and all manner of other ghoulies. Shoot them. It’s not really rocket science.

You know, even though it’s a bit like shooting cardboard cutouts, you’ll find yourself quickly addicted to the game. Victory isn’t measured in surviving here; you can’t “win” the game. You just have to last as long as you can before the undead hoards feast on your carcas. Playing a game where you already know you’re dead meat sooner or later is fun sometimes: you get to be reckless making a run for that powerup and get experimental with your shooting pattern. Plus, even though it’s all team play, the highscores for longest lasting victim help keep things competetive.
Even though there are some glitches, not one of them makes this game hard to play or slow. Of course, it’s not the technical aspects that will keep you coming back, it’s the tasty gratuitous violence. Whenever you just feel like blasting something, swing by the Garage of DOOM. If you’re going to get ripped apart by the legions of the undead, you might as well have fun doing it

ZOMBIE SURVIVAL SM

Another game made from modified metal slug sprites is Zombie Survival SM from Armor Games. Its basically one of those 'protect the castle' games where the levels get progressively more difficult and you earn points to spend on skills to help you with the increase in difficulty. Simple concept, and thats why its fun to play. That, and you're shooting zombies to pieces. The game also utilizes a fair amount of resident evil sound rips like the music, the zombie noises and the bullets you fire.

ZOMBIE SURVIVAL

A bad version of this game is 'Zombie Survival' from CrazyMonkey Games. It feels very flat and light in comparison, none of the sounds seem to really fit either. Its here if you want to see what I mean.

BOXHEAD: THE ROOMS

However, from the same publishing house, CrazyMonkey, comes 'Boxhead games' and the halloween special version of this is a zombie shoot em up where you rapidly accumlulate a wealthy cache of weaponary to fighting back invading hordes of block shaped zombies. The sound in this game and the way in which you move are much heavier and more autenthic feeling; these are definatly important parts to bringing an authentic experience to a player. Here it is to try if you fancy a bit of blasting.hippo_boy_willhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17031086264594993106noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5386661091178577167.post-20398825225179176152008-03-21T11:18:00.003+00:002008-03-21T11:23:09.184+00:00Survivors - Resi 2 beta Art

Now the avatars from Capcom - The people who are designed for us to instill our indentities within and fight through hordes of undead nastiness. I like how unrefined these beta concepts are, gives me some hope! But more importantly, I like how they accuractely chart the development of some of my favourite video game characters.

I don't know if Owen has any preplanned characters in the works; I'm fairly certain the players he wants to be used are more civilian themed, like those from the Resident Evil: Outbreak series but this is a good place to start. Whoever developed these characters was thinking 'does this person look like someone who could survive something like this?'.

Maybe this would be a thought process we'd want to be countering, to make the game more humourous, I'm not sure yet but here's your pics anyway!
hippo_boy_willhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17031086264594993106noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5386661091178577167.post-17513795996462301802008-03-20T19:14:00.005+00:002008-03-20T22:36:01.263+00:00Lighter/simpler Zombies?<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; I think they are closer to the kind of feel Owen is going for, a simple one. I don't necessairly mean cute, I just mean more basic looking, made of circles and blobby squares. It might not be the shape of the zombies but the use of silohuetting tones in Patapon and LocoRoco that Owen is looking for so I need to clarify this.

It also occurs to me that I need to look at how to present the environs of the game. And the avatars/characters you control and the items that they pick up. AND any major events really. Not just about the zombies :P.

I think what I need to do is get a list of stuff off Owen that he wants making/drawing/painting/thinking about really otherwise I could make too much for myself to do.

My understanding at this moment though is that I need to basically be thinking of all the imagery that could be used in a 'zombie infestation on the city' scenario so.. I was on the right track with my thinking.hippo_boy_willhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17031086264594993106noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5386661091178577167.post-2442993476372421102008-03-20T17:41:00.003+00:002008-03-20T18:59:14.058+00:00Resident Evil Zombies

Good old Capcom. They've done their part in solidifying the archetypal undead chappie in their Resident evil video games and here are some examples of their fine work. Truely gruesome!

Notice there is a strong hold on realistic-looking human faces and bodies which brings a strong sense of disgust horror to the table when we start getting these authentic tears of flesh and veins and decay. There are cases throughout as well in which the zombies seem almost to consist of white eyes and a menacing jaw; cleverly done through emphasizing these two areas. They do a good job of turning these creatures into just that - creatures, beasts, like wild animals that we fear to be eaten by. This is a paticularly strong mood to go for and an intimidatingly hostile one at that! Hmm Hmm.

I found an article at gamecareerguide.com (btw looks like a gud site to talk to industry-connected folks!) on the zombies in resident evil representing the 'real'; the inevitable cataclysm of our desires for nihilistic destruction and assimilation. Or to be consumed. It's a pretty heavy read but I need to show it to Owen to see if he'd like to bring any of this subversive element into the game, perhaps in how the essay describes that we are defending our own realities and identies by fighting these attempts to breach the fragile perceptions we have on our surroundings. But, to be honest I think this kind of thinking is best left out of the game for the moment if not indefinatly; I have a habit of seriously overcomplicating and drowing projects.. -kof kof-

Anyway, the essay is here for anyone interested.
